PRODUCT OVERVIEW:

The “Robby the Robot,” manufactured exclusively by Fred Barton Productions, Inc. of Los Angeles, California, and licensed through Tuner Entertainment, a Time/Warner Co, is a seven-foot tall, animatronic robot statue, as seen in “Forbidden Planet”.

All of Robby’s mechanisms are hand-made out of the finest materials and are custom controlled for “Robby” who arrives pre-programmed with several memorable lines from “Forbidden Planet”. “Robby”, is highly detailed and looks identical to the robot-costume as seen in “Forbidden Planet”. The very same 60+ year old suit which just sold for a record breaking $5,375,000 at auction. The highest amount ever paid for a screen-used “Hero” prop. Proving once again that Robby is king of robots, and highly sought after.

Like his mid-century predecessor Robby does it all, exactly as you saw him in “Forbidden Planet”. Plus, this robot is more than a recreation or replica, he is virtually another “Robby” created from molds, accurate blue-prints and templates acquired from the original costume which appeared in the movie. This new “Robby” was then completely made-over to the highest quality and standards. Only Fred Barton Productions, Inc. can offer this high degree of authenticity as Mr. Barton was commissioned to restore the original robot auctioned off by MGM and displayed at a Southern California Museum.

In every way, Fred Barton’s Limited Editions of “Robby” are far superior in look than the original. In the retooling process, any flaws in the robots body were removed, without compromising that special look the robot is famous for. “Robby” is now fabricated out of sturdy Fiberglas and weighs over 100 pounds. No thermoformed plastic (which will warp over time) was used in the making of the robot. The body was produced by an exclusive industrial fabricating house, whose Fiber-glassing standards and finish workmanship are substantially higher than those employed by the typical Hollywood Prop-shop.

SPECIFICATIONS:

DIGITAL AUDIO:

The robots audio section is digitally stored. When “Robby” talks, the mercury-vapor neon tubes in his mouth flash synchronously with his original voice as featured in “Forbidden Planet”. An optional deluxe neon activation circuit, mercury vapor tubes and transformers are available to replicate the random neon activation sequence in his mouth as seen in the classic film. “Robby’s” voice is driven by speaker-system mounted in the head. An integral amplifier is built into the printed circuit board. This superior audio-system, allows for crystal-clear speech and studio-quality sound.

MECHANISMS:

Robby’s complex mechanisms are all hand-made by the finest machinists in the business. Only machine-grade metals such as brass, and aluminum were employed in the manufacture of these intricate Swiss-like movements. No cast resin or cheap plastic castings were used in any mechanism anywhere in the manufacture of the robot. These mechanisms are built to last and function exactly like those made for “Robby” by the MGM property masters of the fabulous fifties. This much authenticity and attention to detail is unparalleled in the world of movie-props, collectibles and studio-licensed products.

HEAD:

D.C. Servo-controlled – Programmed 100° movement. This servo-controlled, motorized head system with heavy-duty motor brings Robby to life. The electronically-driven motor performs both pre-programmed and random head movements so no two show presentations will ever be alike. Robby looks where he pleases and with this feature, you’ll swear he is alive.

GYRO:

Three engraved Acrylic discs, interlaced with hand-painted, hardened steel hoops, orbit in a planetary fashion, mounted on a motorized solid brass-bell housing with polished aluminum mounts and brass gears. Above the gyros is a hand-turned aluminum heat-sink and Acrylic lamp housing.

SCANNERS:

Robby’s trademark vertical and horizontal scanners are direct drive and rotate as programmed at variable speeds.

ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY:

Six computer relays rock up and down, each being hit individually, three times on the way up for a fascinating effect. Activation before Robby speaks. Lights flash.

RECIPROCATING ARMS:

Two ivory colored reciprocating arms twitch back and forth as the Rocker Arm Assembly activates during “Robby’s” complex computations.

TORSO:

Heart Box: Aluminum-housed Oscillating Acrylic Star and Indicator Light.

Brass Rotating Quad Light.                    Pulsating Piano Keys.

All lights in the head and body flash and operate as seen in “Forbidden Planet”.

Rf REMOTE CONTROL:

“Robby’s” show routines are accessed via an Rf remote-control. The remote control activates all shows. Remote functions include:

  • VOLUME – Up/Down
  • TRACK SELECTION.
  • SHOW STOP.
